The Very Hungry Caterpillar

March 16, 2009

The ever popular ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle was read (again) to each Prep class during an Art Lesson early in Term 1. They painted half an egg carton in different shades of green with red and yellow spots if desired. The following week joggle eyes were glued on and a pipe cleaner added as feelers. The caterpillars are displayed on ‘leaves’ in the Art Room and on the display boards outside the classrooms.

Artist In Residence

The Art Room and Murrumbeena themed sculptures   Murrumbeena themed sculptures in the quiet areaMurrumbeena: \'A place of Frogs\'.

During the first half of 2008 we were fortunate to have Ursula Dutzewitcz as the Artist in Residence to create fabulous sculptures as a permanent art installation in the quiet area of the school grounds.

Children in Grades 3 & 4 made glazed ceramic stepping stones that were laid in a trail around and through the totem poles.

The totem poles each had a sculpture on top with a Murrumbeena theme. Each child in Grades 5 & 6 assisted in making the sculptures under the guidance and direction of Ursula, the Artist-in-Residence. Each child then made an individual tile for the totem pole, once again with the theme of ‘Murrumbeena.’ The area was planted out with native grasses by keen parent gardeners.

Four native Victorian frogs were modelled and glazed by grade 3 & 4 students from 3/4E and placed in the garden beds outside the Music/Art Rooms. It was an additional contribution to the Art Installation as we celebrated 2008 as ‘The Year of the Frog’.

The children are now enjoying using the stepping stones as part of their playtime games.
